Digital pathology algorithms to combat cancer

Royal Philips will support oncology researchers' efforts to analyse pathology samples by offering advanced image analysis algorithms from Indica Labs as part of its Digital Pathology Solutions offerings. The collaboration will allow pathology researchers to apply intelligent algorithms to digitised pathology slides, which may enhance their ability to detect, process and extract information from tissue samples than currently possible using a conventional microscope.

Detecting colon cancer by a simple blood test

Irish scientists are developing a new €25 blood test for bowel cancer, which could save thousands of lives by spotting the disease at the earliest possible opportunity. The simple check will pick up antibodies in the blood, produced as the body reacts to the onset of bowel cancer.

Hologic has announced a five-year contract for its ThinPrep Pap tests and processing equipment with Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. With this agreement, Royal Derby Hospital will be the largest ThinPrep processing laboratory in the UK, with an estimated 150,000 samples processed annually.

Water company wins again in RoSPA Awards

Veolia Water Technologies UK, Elga Process Water, Elga LabWater and Aquafab have, once again, had their approach to occupational health and safety recognised in an awards scheme run by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). Veolia received the prestigious President’s Award for the second year running, having gained the society’s Gold Medal for the 11th consecutive year. The presentations were made at the Award Ceremony held recently at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, at the National Exhibition Centre.

Automated vial filling system

TAP Biosystems, a supplier of innovative cell culture systems and consumables for life science applications, has announced that its Fill-It automated benchtop vial filling system is being used routinely at an innovative cell therapy company developing cancer immunotherapies. This has improved processing speed and throughput of large batches of cells in cryovials for use as master cell banks or as cell-based immunotherapies.
