Additions to the programme and sponsors for this important British Society for Microbial Technology (BSMT) virtual conference, which will be held on 11–14 May, have now been released. See the following for the latest details…

Tues 11 May – Moderator: Professor Eric Bolton, Public Health England

  • 2.00 pm: Dr Michael Head, University of Southampton, on the COVID-19 pandemic and global health
  • 3.00 pm: Professor Jonathan Deeks, University of Birmingham, on evaluating test performance for the diagnosis of COVID-19

Wed 12 May – Moderator: Dr Kate Templeton, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary:

  • 2.00 pm: Dr Catherine Moore, Public Health Wales, on her experience setting up and running a SARS-CoV-2 testing service
  • 3.00 pm: Professor Alan McNally, University of Birmingham, on setting up and running a Lighthouse Lab for mass SARS-CoV-2 testing

Thurs 13 May – Moderator: Professor Brian Duerden CBE, Emeritus Professor of Medical Microbiology, Cardiff University

  • 2.00 pm: Professor Jonathan Edgeworth, Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, on secondary bacterial and fungal infections in COVID-19 patients
  • 3.00 pm: Professor Nick Loman, University of Birmingham. on whole-genome sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 Isolates in the COVID-19 pandemic

Friday 14 May - Moderator Dr Mark Wilks, Barts and the London, Queen Mary University of London

  • 2.00 pm: Dr Timothy Rawson, NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow, Imperial College London, on antimicrobial resistance in the time of COVID
  • 3.00 pm: Professor Sheena Cruikshank, University of Manchester, on From Variola to COVID-19: the Development of Modern Vaccines
