WASP Software, together with Warrington & Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has been shortlisted for the Best Technology Partnership of the Year category at the HSJ Partnership Awards 2025 for a transformation project that has resulted in paperless phlebotomy booking services.
Now in their eighth year, the HSJ Partnership Awards have become the most recognised mark of the strongest relationships between suppliers and the NHS. Following a rigorous judging process, WASP Software and Warrington & Halton Teaching Hospitals have been shortlisted from over 280 entries submitted to this year’s awards programme.
The shortlisted Phlebotomy Patient Self-Booking Appointments project (featured in a recent edition of Pathology in Practice) is a pioneering initiative that has transformed the process of booking phlebotomy services, achieving a remarkable 92% adoption rate among patients. This demonstrates the user-friendly nature of the solution and its immediate positive impact on patient engagement and satisfaction. By implementing WASP's booking solution, patients can now easily book phlebotomy appointments online, making the entire service paperless and more convenient. This initiative has significantly improved efficiency, including better capacity management, reduced missed appointments (DNA rates), and allowed the Trust to proactively manage demand based on accurate data rather than anecdotal evidence.
Additionally, the project has provided significant benefits to the pathology department and the Trust contact centre, enabling them to streamline workflows and enhance communication with patients. The contact centre has seen reduced call volumes, while the pathology department has been able to allocate resources more effectively, ultimately improving overall service delivery. The project has also resulted in cost savings by reducing the need for paper documentation and secure document destruction, aligning with sustainability goals.
Michael Brett, Managing Director at WASP Software, comments, "We are delighted to be shortlisted for the Best Technology Partnership of the Year at the HSJ Partnership Awards 2025. This recognition is a huge boost for our dedicated team, who have worked tirelessly to develop a solution that truly benefits patients and healthcare professionals alike. We have seen firsthand how this collaboration has benefited not just patients, but also our partners in the pathology department and the contact centre, reducing administrative workload and increasing efficiency across the board. The HSJ awards are one of the most prestigious platforms for showcasing healthcare innovation, and we are proud to be recognised. We hope our project will inspire other organisations to explore new ways of enhancing NHS services."
The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony taking place at Evolution London on 20 March 2025.
