The adoption of digital pathology continues to see a remarkable surge in the post- COVID-19 era, with pathologists worldwide embracing the technology. Here, Dr Melissa Alexander, a practising pathologist and Medical Director for Leica Biosystems, shares her experience of transitioning from conventional pathology to digital pathology, including the challenges faced during the transition, but also the advantages of remote practice, collaboration, and quick second opinions.
For nearly 25 years the topic of digital pathology has sparked debate among pathologists worldwide, with many initially questioning whether the potential benefits could be realised.
For Leica Biosystems’ Medical Director and Mount Sinai Health System Pathologist, Dr Melissa Alexander, the idea of switching from conventional pathology to digital pathology was, “like being asked to ride a bike and then being told to ride the bike without the handlebars”.
“In 2020, I was sceptical of digital pathology,” Dr Alexander recounted. “As a practising pathologist, every one of us has a routine; you do the same thing every time. By instinct, you approach your review a certain way making you confident that you’ve seen everything on the slide in appropriate detail.”
