The NHS Health Research Authority has launched its new Artificial Intelligence and Digital Regulations Service website, which aims to clearly set out the information and guidance that developers and adopters need to follow to develop safe, innovative technologies in health and social care.
The regulatory pathway for artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies in health and social care can be slow, complex and difficult to navigate. Information can be hard to find and difficult to understand. For researchers this means wasted time and effort, and delays to research projects.
The AI and Digital Regulations Service (which was previously referred to as the Multi-Agency Advisory Service (MAAS) is a partnership between four national bodies:
- Health Research Authority (HRA)
- National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)
- Care Quality Commission (CQC)
- Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
The service aims to clearly set out the information and guidance that developers and adopters need to follow to develop safe, innovative technologies in health and social care, including advice on legal requirements, best practice guidance for the development and adoption of AI and digital technologies.
The website is currently in public beta which means it is available to view but changes are still being made based on feedback received. Initially the website will provide advice and information for developers, with another section for adopters following in the next few months.
