Welcome to the December issue of Pathology in Practice, as we edge towards the end of 2022 and inevitably start wondering what next year will bring. Looking at the various articles contained within this issue it seems a fairly good bet that diagnostics will continue to move closer to the patient base, continuing the trend of testing at the point of need.

As trailed in the last issue, you can read our summary of the recent Point of care: Innovations event, where – unsurprisingly perhaps – many of the speakers discussed how testing was changing and will carry on doing so. Click here to read

Respiratory infections are one of the most commonly tested ailments, and were addressed in detail by two speakers at the POCT event, one detailing a testing programme to reduce the unnecessary prescribing of antibiotics, which is likely to be another theme of great importance over the year to come. In this issue I’m pleased to have a piece from Dr Esmita Charani on that very subject, where she looks at the local issues which need to be overcome in differing communities all around the world to start to address the issue of anti-microbial resistance (AMR). And while we’re on respiratory infections, you can also read about a new piece of equipment from HORIBA which offers a test for C-reactive Protein alongside a full blood count, with results available in minutes – which could help relieve inevitable winter pressures on NHS emergency departments. The advance of digital technology will surely also continue to gather pace in 2023. Two articles in this issue demonstrate how technology is enhancing the delivery of pathology services; first with a West Midlands-based partnership adopting a suite of digital tools from Sectra to improve the speed and accuracy of cancer diagnosis for NHS patient’s as well as tackling the backlog that is a legacy of COVID-19. And secondly our cover feature from Source Bioscience, which demonstrates how its Source LDPath platform offers a digital vision for histology departments, with diagnosis supported by artificial intelligence. Click here to read

Enjoy these and the other delights this issue has to offer, we’ll be back in 2023 with our first issue in February (published 9 February).

Have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
