Conference: The changing picture of diagnostics

The King’s Fund is hosting a one-day conference in London on 16 November, looking at the future role of diagnostics in the NHS.

Sir Mike Richards’ review of diagnostics, ‘Diagnostics: recovery and renewal’, which was commissioned in response to recommendations in the NHS Long-Term Plan, outlined a new diagnostic model for services.

The review identified key enablers to drive and deliver much needed change to optimise diagnostic capacity and improve efficiency, along with the need for a major expansion of the workforce and improved connectivity and digitisation across all aspects of diagnostics.

Demand for almost all aspects of diagnostics has been rising year on year. The public’s familiarisation with swab testing and testing closer to home through the COVID-19 pandemic has provided a strong launch pad to change the approach to diagnostics in response to this rising demand

This event will explore what can be learnt from the NHS response to COVID-19, how partners are working to reshape diagnostic pathways through community diagnostic centres, point-of-care testing and increasing workforce capability and capacity.

Leaders and experts from across the NHS, academia and the life sciences industry will gather to explore how to build a more sustainable diagnostic sector. The event will:

  • consider how to plan and map local diagnostic services to address unmet need
  • discuss how to use community assets to redefine the diagnostic model
  • explore how to embed point-of-care testing and remote monitoring effectively and at scale
  • discuss the role of primary care in diagnostic pathways
  • consider how to establish community diagnostic hubs to address unmet health needs and widen access to diagnostics.

The conference takes place at The King's Fund, London, W1G 0AN and a full list of confirmed speakers can be found on the website.
