New pre-eclampsia testing on the NHS: a response

Roche Diagnostics UK recently responded to news that pregnant women will be offered a simple blood test to detect pre-eclampsia on the NHS.

Geoff Twist, Managing Director of Roche Diagnostics UK and Ireland, said: “It’s fantastic to see NICE’s announcement recommending pre-eclampsia testing across all NHS hospitals in England. Roche Diagnostics is proud to support on this important issue, with pre-eclampsia affecting up to 6% of all pregnancies in the UK and thousands more suspected of having the potentially devastating condition.

“Until now pre-eclampsia care has rightly been characterised by caution, but our test, which was selected to be on the AAC list of rapid uptake products, can reliably help healthcare professionals to decide on the most appropriate care during pregnancy by ruling in or ruling out suspected pre-eclampsia. In this way, one simple blood test can help give healthcare professionals greater confidence in their decision-making and provide much needed reassurance to expectant mothers. We strongly believe that everyone should have access to quality care, no matter where they live.

“With the NHS under such significant pressure, using the right diagnostic test at the right time can enable swift decision-making, help free-up beds and hospital-related resources, and play a crucial role in helping our NHS tackle the backlog caused by the pandemic.”
