Smallest molecular system expands access to fully-automated testing

Roche Diagnostics has launched its new molecular laboratory instrument, the cobas 5800 System, in the UK. The new system can help raise testing volumes, improve efficiency and manage the increasing demand that many laboratories are experiencing.

The system has a small footprint making it accessible to many more laboratories, particularly those with less space. The fully automated system, which consolidates 90% of routine testing on a single platform, minimises laboratory workers’ hands-on time and improves productivity. The system provides a scalable solution for smaller laboratories seeking big laboratory performance, or for bigger laboratories seeking small laboratory agility.

The cobas 5800 will be available for demonstrations at the IBMS Congress on 14-17 March.

The processing digital platform it uses, the Molecular Work Area, currently performs over 10 million tests per month on more than 1000 installed systems around the world.

The cobas 5800 System is a real-time PCR molecular testing solution that provides excellent performance and value-added utility from a compact footprint. The cobas 5800 System delivers automation, consolidation, integration and standardisation – making it a scalable, cost-efficient solution.

The system is built to offer a fully automated workflow that encompasses sample supply, transfer and preparation, amplification and detection, result calculation and delivery to the laboratory information system (LIS). The single module enables a walkaway time of up to eight hours, resulting in less hands-on time, which can lead to improved productivity, reduced possibility for errors and more predictable turnaround times.
