Brighton academic receives prestigious IBMS Life Membership

Dr Sarah Pitt has been made a Life Member of the Institute of Biomedical Science in recognition of her long and valuable contribution to the field of virology.

Dr Pitt, Principal Lecturer in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, has become a familiar name in both print and broadcast media over the past year for her expert insights into the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Alongside her university research, Dr Pitt has had a long-time role as Chief Examiner for Virology at the IBMS, overseeing the setting of professional examinations and continuing professional development activities carried out by the Institute.

Dr Pitt said: “I am surprised and very honoured to receive this award from my professional body in recognition of the work I do for them, including training and education of biomedical scientists – both in academic programmes here at the University of Brighton and the Institute's professional qualifications.

“I am also involved in preparing policy and information for IBMS members and the wider public. This has included explaining virology, laboratory testing and vaccines on national and international media during the past 12 months. My colleagues have always been very supportive of the work I do for the Institute, and have been particularly understanding while I have been doing COVID-19-related work".
