One of the two recognised early pathology disciplines, histopathology now combines modern practical laboratory techniques with sophisticated molecular biology methods, both of which facilitate the application of personalised medicine.
Cellular pathology is the biomedical science and pathology discipline that includes histopathology and cytopathology; more recently categorised as ‘cellular sciences’ in the biomedical science career pathway. To many, the histopathology laboratory will no doubt conjure up memories of formalin and xylene fumes, paraffin wax-impregnated floors, ancient and capricious dyes, and a seasoned histologist in a stained laboratory coat, stropping a massive microtome knife before embarking on endless section cutting.
The fact that many of us joined the profession not because we necessarily loved the smell of xylene in the morning, but because we were fascinated by the alchemy of it all is beside the point. The point being, times have moved on and modern histopathology is now as molecular as any of the other biomedical sciences, as I will strive to convince you.
