Following the two-part review of the comprehensive IBMS Biomedical Science Congress scientific lecture programme, published in the October and December issues, Pathology in Practice now turns the spotlight on other equally important areas of the laboratory service.
The thirteenth biennial IBMS Biomedical Science Congress, held in Birmingham last September, illustrated the diverse and evolving nature of laboratory medicine. In addition to the first-rate scientific programme and comprehensive exhibition, the event also shone a spotlight on issues of education and training, laboratory and quality management, which are reflected in the following summaries provided by speakers.

As we entered the new millennium, expectations were high as the NHS Agenda for Change was launched, the aim of which was to create multidisciplinary training and greater flexibility around working practices and career progression. Emphasis was on professional development, fitness for purpose, maximising the contribution of all staff, and, of course, it was patient-focused.
