With the rapid pace of technology, keeping it simple is sometimes best

Lateral-flow assays have become a common feature across the breadth of in vitro diagnostics. While they are designed to offer a simple visual readout, on occasions weak reactions may cause uncertainty. This is where a lateral-flow reader can help, as Charlotte Duncan explains.

Innovation in pathology diagnostics is moving at a tremendous pace, with implementation of next-generation sequencing, novel molecular methods such as loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and automation affecting almost all laboratory practices. While these innovations offer service improvements and efficiencies to cope with the ever-increasing demand on the healthcare system, they also ensure diagnostics services in the UK are leading the way globally.

Pro-Lab Diagnostics has been integral to core microbiology services for over 25 years, providing high-quality wet diagnostics kits and consumables. More recently, the company has undergone significant changes in its structure and direction, moving into various fields such as automation, molecular diagnostics and novel systems for aiding management of sepsis. With this in mind, it is prudent to remember the core products and technologies that underpin operations, both within companies and in the laboratory.

One obvious example of this is the Gram stain. While automated systems are available, this is a key test that all microbiologists will perform, and no matter the level of automation will likely still be performed over a (usually purple) sink! However, the current article will focus on a relatively simple technology used extensively not only in pathology diagnostics, but also across a number of other industry sectors including environmental testing, animal health, food and feed testing, and plant and crop health, not to mention point-of-care testing (POCT) and use at home.
