Introduction of an ambitious managed service contract has allowed the Blood Sciences Service in Leeds to realise its ambition of delivering an automated HbA1c diagnostic service. Richard Liversidge and Stephanie Shaw explain.
Pathology at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) provides local, regional and national diagnostic services to a population of approximately 2.3 million people. The Department of Blood Sciences is based over two large teaching hospital sites, Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and St James’s University Hospital, and processes around 8.8 million tests per annum.
The Leeds pathology service recently entered into a comprehensive, wide-ranging and ambitious managed service contract with Siemens Healthineers, and this partnership has led to significant investment, helping it to realise its strategic ambition to become a leading provider of local and regional pathology services.
Under the managed service contract, Tosoh Bioscience became a third-party supplier, and the existing relationship with the Department of Blood Sciences was set to continue. Tosoh Bioscience has provided high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipment since 2008, first at Britannia House and then in the new automated laboratory within the Old Medical School (LGI), a Grade II listed building.
