Pathology and the NHS Five Year Forward View

Delegates from across the NHS pathology spectrum attended the annual national information technology conference, staged earlier in the year by CliniSys at The Belfry in the West Midlands. Donald Saum reports.

Pathology in England appears to have reached a crossroad at which the central themes of efficiency, quality, validity and value are recognised and understood, but the momentum of travel and the maturity of service transformation roadmaps varies considerably in and between the Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STP’s). The opening programme at the CliniSys National Summer Conference brought together NHS and pathology leaders in a fascinating conference, balancing challenging messages such as ‘there is no more money’ and the drive to ‘deliver more for less’, with examples of innovative service transformation affording enhanced value and patient benefits.

Fiona Pearson (CliniSys CEO) opened the conference by considering the key role technology plays in enabling laboratory medicine to respond to change and transform services in alignment with new and future models of healthcare delivery. She introduced several areas of technological change that are set to impact and disrupt the current landscape, including cloud computing, big data analytics, dashboards, artificial intelligence and portable and wearable devices. She explored these in the context of the shift to more personalised healthcare and stratified medicine, and the immediate drive to support the effective development of regional pathology networks.

Fiona reinforced the need to understand current and future customer and market requirements, and to consider the appropriate application of technology in enabling change. The IT and technology landscape in laboratory medicine has become more complex and demanding, and Fiona illustrated how CliniSys has supported new and existing users successfully in transforming and optimising services, extending their scope and reach, and adding value thorough committed product development, innovative and strategic partnerships. She concluded her introduction with an overview of the benefits she expects to secure with the integration of Sunquest ICE into CliniSys, which included ‘end to end’ process optimisation and enhanced interoperability, roadmap alignment and efficient deployment and support processes.
