Disposal of end-of-life equipment

Medisort is a healthcare waste management provider, working with healthcare professionals in hospitals, GP practices, dentists, tattooists and veterinary surgeons. The company treats infectious or potentially infectious waste in its own facilities, helping customers comply with the law.

Medisort is the first organisation to be granted a bespoke permit by the Environment Agency to treat potentially contaminated end-of-life medical equipment in its steam sterilisation autoclaves, prior to recycling and final disposal. The company is able to offer a service wherever potentially contaminated instruments or their parts are beyond economic use and require decommissioning and disposal.

The document available from Medisort describes the service available that fulfils obligations placed upon medical equipment providers outlined by the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. It ensures WEEE is disposed of in a way that offers protection to the environment and people involved in the disposal process through to final material recycling. It also complies fully with the Safe Management of Healthcare Waste v2, which includes the Controlled Waste Regulations 2012 that came into force on 6 April 2012, and the ISO14001:2004 Environmental Management Quality Standard.
