A successful chapter in a continuing journey: a 40-year celebration

In September, Lorne Laboratories will celebrate four decades of support predominantly to those working in transfusion science, as this company profile illustrates.

Lorne Laboratories, based near Reading in Berkshire, has been providing high-quality blood grouping reagents, diagnostic kits and laboratory equipment across all five continents of the globe for 40 years. In fact, its 40th birthday will be celebrated on 23 September, which coincides with this year’s British Blood Transfusion Society annual conference in Harrogate. This conference is an integral part of Lorne’s business plan as the company has been successful in supplying the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) service through a framework agreement during the entirety of its existence, as well as supplying individual hospitals, universities and other medically oriented companies during its lifetime. It is, however, substantial growth in the export market that has led to the company’s position of strength which it enjoys today.

Affordability and quality
Lorne’s blood grouping reagents have been viewed by blood transfusion specialists around the world as a brand that represents quality while retaining a focus on affordability. The Lorne brand has enjoyed a growing reputation over the past 40 years of which other manufacturers have been envious. This has been a major factor in developing a wide-ranging sales network within the UK that companies selling complementary products have wished to take advantage. This has led to Lorne entering into longstanding business partnerships/distributor agreements with a number of other market-leading brands.

Complementary product range
For over 10 years Lorne has been the UK distributor for Merck Millipore, distributing finished blood grouping reagents alongside is own product range. It has also developed a strong partnership with both Worthington Biochemicals and Rockland Immunochemicals from the USA. The major biochemicals that Worthington purifies are proteins obtained from animals, plants, and fermentation sources and other natural substances, while Rockland works to validate the performance of antibodies by assays commonly used by most researchers, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. To demonstrate its desire to offer a wide-ranging complementary product range, Lorne also offers refrigeration and laboratory equipment lines from Fiocchetti, Ljungberg & Kogel and GG&B.
