Implementation of a bespoke sample sorter in haematology

Automated sample sorting can have a significant impact on a laboratory’s Lean credentials, as Elizabeth Kelsey and Wendy Leversuch explain.

The haematology laboratory at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital recently installed new equipment, one item of which was the Sarstedt 900 Flex. This is a bespoke sample sorter can be calibrated solely to service the needs of an individual department. The sorter is organised into three main sections (Fig 1):
* sample input
* samples with outstanding tests
* archiving.

The functionality of the Sarstedt equipment means that the department’s three main routine haematology analysers (Siemens ADVIA 2120, Trinity Destiny Max and Bio-Rad Variant II) can be loaded directly.

Sarstedt 900 Flex
The Sarstedt 900 Flex is a pre-analytical and post-analytical sorter that can be integrated with a department’s laboratory information system (LIS). The sorter offers a range of features; for example it can scan the barcoded unique laboratory number on a sample, it recognises cap colour, it is customisable to the specific needs of any laboratory, can be integrated with decapping or recapping technology, and can sort up to 900 samples an hour (Fig 2).
