Vocal recognition gaining ground within pathology department

TalkingPoint for Pathology, GHG Software’s specialist pathology VR workflow system, has been implemented in the pathology department at Blackpool Victoria NHS Hospital, to meet the immediate needs of the healthcare environment and help to improve the efficiency of the reporting system.

Following a staff consultation period, 50% of the medical secretaries in the department sought voluntary redundancy; as a result, the hospital needed to implement an alternative, efficient and speedy solution. The management team analysed the workflows and work processes involved in the reporting process and saw that cost and time savings could also be improved upon.

Voice recognition (VR) was identified as the ideal solution. With TalkingPoint’s proven and flexible VR workflow solution and GHG’s extensive experience in pathology at other trusts, GHG were charged with the task of getting the system tailored, implemented and productive within a six-week period.

Following a site visit to University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trusts’ (UHMB) Lancaster Royal Infirmary, the Blackpool team could see the benefits first hand. Just three months on from the implementation, the advantages are being realised at Blackpool. Commenting on the IT integration, Phil Houldsworth, pathology operations manager at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, said: “I would say reporting time using TalkingPoint is down by as much as 25%, if not more in some cases. This is a significant benefit for the patient, getting results and treatment faster, and for the hospital in the form of greater efficiencies.”
