Centre of excellence for imaging

Microscopy technology supplied by Preston-based Image Solutions (Imsol) has been at the heart of efforts being made at the University of Dundee to understand better human health issues such as cancer, ageing and congential disorders.

The University’s Imaging Centre hosts one of the UK’s largest and most advanced light microscopy facilities, with 28 advanced optical imaging platforms supporting life and medical sciences research. The department has been using Imsol’s imaging systems alongside its service and support for the past 12 years.

Since 2002, the Dundee Imaging Centre has received a series of multimillion- pound awards from the Wellcome Trust in recognition of its expertise to develop and
deploy novel quantitative approaches to cell and tissue biology, particularly in the areas of gene regulation and expression, developmental biology, cancer research and immunology. The University of Dundee has also received significant funding from the Medical Research Council to support image processing and data analysis.

Dr Sam Swift, Director of Imaging at the University of Dundee, explained: “One of the key benefits of working with Image Solutions is that we have exceptionally low down time on these instruments due to the company’s expertise and intelligent approach to system maintenance and servicing. Furthermore, having invested heavily in image
restoration platforms, we have confidence in the lifespan of these systems as a result of the upgrade pathways offered by the company. Our partnership with Imsol enables us to stay at the cutting edge of imaging technology and research while delivering exceptional value to the charities and research councils who fund us.”
