Streamlined and efficient pathology: vital to hospital service expansion

Recently opened new pathology facilities at Darent Valley Hospital in Kent are seen as vital to the 10-year expansion plan for hospital services in the north of the county known as the garden of England.

The creation of the new North Kent Pathology Service at Darent Valley Hospital is part of the long- term vision of Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust for the provision of health services to the region. This is a plan which Chris Gunn, pathology service general manager, and his team will be driving forward alongside their managed service partner Beckman Coulter. The objective is to deliver an improved, cost-effective and expanded diagnostic service to the south east for at least the next 10 years.

Chris Gunn explained: “The pathology service works for two reasons. We have streamlined and automated our processes and because of the quality and dedication of the staff who have willingly adopted a new way of working.”

The trust, led by chief executive Susan Alcott, has fostered an energy-driven, patient-focused culture within the hospital, reflected by staff at all levels. Nowhere is this clearer than in the new laboratory. From scientists, consultants, medical laboratory assistants and support staff, the attitude is the same. There is a professional ethos of equality, collaboration and a will to take the initiative in the best interests of the patient.
