ISO15189: understanding the implications for laboratory medicine

As withdrawal of Clinical Pathology Accreditation standards looms, Siemens asked experts at its chemistry and immunoassay user group to explore the changes ahead.

Medical laboratories are essential to the provision of high-quality care, playing a significant part in facilitating the patient pathway. Ensuring laboratory systems and processes are aligned and fit for purpose; the ISO 15189 standards will play an increasingly large part in certifying quality and competence.

With recent developments in how laboratories are assessed against ISO 15189 in the UK, Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA) accredited laboratories will now transfer to United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accreditation as part of a strategy to contribute to the modernisation of pathology services.

In order to understand the impact of the change and the new requirements involved, Ian Rothnie, (Aberdeen Royal Infirmary), a UKAS technical expert recently chaired a two-day Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Chemistry and Immunoassay User Group meeting, which was attended by biomedical scientists and laboratory managers from across the UK.
