Safe transportation of biological samples: an application overview

The prospect of pathology service centralisation introduces the potential for increased transport of biological specimens. Here, Rachel Adams looks at the way one company can facility improved safety with a range of leakproof and pressure-validated products.

For 50 years, Sterilin, part of Thermo Fisher Scientific, has set high standards for quality, reliability and user safety in the field of single-use laboratory plastics. Now, once again, it continues to lead the way, offering a range of 95 kPa-validated disposable containers for the transportation of clinical specimens. Not only does this help customers to meet stringent transport regulations but it provides valuable peace of mind for the safe and reliable transportation of biological samples.

Safer transportation
With more and more biological samples being transported through normal mailing systems, using different forms of transportation (from bikes to aeroplanes), the containers used to transport these samples are subject to increasingly tighter transport regulations. Furthermore, the requirements can vary depending on the mode of transport and the classification
of samples.1

The highly regarded International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidance for infectious substances (Packing Instructions 602) and diagnostic specimens (Packing Instructions 650),2 for example, states that each package must contain a primary and a secondary container; both containers must be leakproof; and at least one of the containers must pass a 95 kPa (13.8 PSI) pressure test.
