GSTS Pathology and Bedford Hospital NHS Trust have gone live with their new £1 million microbiology facility, housing a range of new equipment that will further improve the service GSTS provides to patients at Bedford Hospital. The investment modernises microbiology at Bedford Hospital, allowing staff to process more samples more quickly. It will increase quality and efficiency and ultimately provide an upgraded service both to patients and clinicians in the local area.
The new technologies include a fully automated inoculation system, while KIESTRA InoqulA provides a largely end-to-end service to increase efficiency and reliability. This state-of-the-art system processes specimens in the most efficient way by automatically separating them into multiple cultures for testing. In addition, new urine and blood culture analysers will increase workload capacity and allow more tests to be carried out on an automated basis. GSTS Pathology is a joint venture between Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Serco Group. It is one of the largest independent pathology organisations in the UK. For Bedford Hospital NHS Trust, the collaboration brings access to cutting-edge technology and the business development expertise of GSTS Pathology.
