Part of Lab M’s extensive range of products for the isolation and identification of Salmonella species, Harlequin Salmonella ABC is a chromogenic medium suitable for culturing organisms from clinical and food samples. This medium differentiates Salmonella spp. from other members of the Enterobacteriaciae by their ability to produce alpha-galactosidase in the absence of beta-galactosidase, using a dual chromogen system for visualisation.
Clinical samples may be streaked direct on the medium or plated following selective enrichment in selenite broth. For food samples, streaking for single colonies follows pre-enrichment and selective enrichment. Lab M’s full range of Salmonella products is designed to enable selection of the most suitable medium for any circumstance – from pre-enrichment to isolation. It includes the company’s inhibitor-free buffered peptone water, which supports the recovery of sublethally damaged organisms prior to further enrichment in media such as Rappaport Vassiliadis broth, Mueller Kaufmann tetrathionate novobiocin broth (MKTTn) and selenite broth. As well as Harlequin Salmonella ABC chromogenic medium for selective isolation, Lab M also offers traditional media such as XLD agar and Brilliant Green agar.
