Government recognition to boost cord blood usage

Virgin Health Bank, the UK’s only licensed and accredited cord blood bank, has welcomed greater government interest and involvement, as health secretary Alan Johnston opened the new cord blood bank at Nottingham Trent University last month.

While the Anthony Nolan Trust only collects cord blood donations for public use, Virgin Health Bank is unique as the only licensed cord blood bank in the UK offering collection for both public and private use, thus giving parents access to the short-term and the long-term benefits afforded by umbilical cord blood stem cells.

A proportion of each unit of cord blood collected through the Virgin model is included on a donor register, and is available to clinicians for public use, while the remainder is stored for private use, should the individual need it in later life. Virgin Health Bank believes that all parents should have the right to collect and store their cord blood and to retain control over their stored unit for its lifespan, as is the case for bone marrow donors.
