Virgin Health Bank, the UK’s only licensed and accredited cord blood bank, has welcomed greater government interest and involvement, as health secretary Alan Johnston opened the new cord blood bank at Nottingham Trent University last month.
A proportion of each unit of cord blood collected through the Virgin model is included on a donor register, and is available to clinicians for public use, while the remainder is stored for private use, should the individual need it in later life. Virgin Health Bank believes that all parents should have the right to collect and store their cord blood and to retain control over their stored unit for its lifespan, as is the case for bone marrow donors.
