Safe and appropriate use of blood

The National Comparative Audit Programme includes a series of audits of the safe and appropriate use of blood. It is operated in collaboration with the Clinical Effectiveness and Evaluation Unit of the Royal College of Physicians. All hospitals in England are invited to participate in the audits, and those in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland are invited to participate through the blood services in those countries.

In 2007–08 the National Comparative Audit of Blood Transfusion completed two audits and commenced a third. In addition, it supported a regional audit conducted by the South West and West Midlands Regional Transfusion Committees. This audit did not report until May/June this year, so details are not included in the current report www.ibms.org/pdf/national_comparative_ audit_blood_transfusion_report_0708.doc
