Automated antibiotic susceptibility testing

Don Whitley Scientific has announced a new addition to its comprehensive microbiology product range. Biomic V3, manufactured by US company Giles Scientific, automates the reading and interpretation of British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) antibiotic susceptibility test plates and commercial identification test panels for bacteria and yeast.

Biomic V3 has been designed to complement other automated systems, or it can serve as a primary antibiotic susceptibility testing and identification (AST-ID) system. Streamlining laboratory workflow, it standardises test results by eliminating reading variability and transcription errors, and can read up to 360 sensitivity plates per hour.

The time-saving image analyser features a bidirectional laboratory information system, touchscreen, barcoding, rapid-batch entry, multisystem networking and worklist download capabilities. Steve Robertson, DWS sales director, is particularly pleased to welcome the product, and said: “With on-screen training for identification procedures, final identification can be carried out in minutes for 80–85% of isolates, and at a fraction of the cost of other systems. Biomic V3 fits perfectly into our range.”
