Microbial growth improved by vitamin-rich peptone

Oxoid has extended its range of laboratory preparations to include Tryptone X (code LP0642), a new vitamin-rich pancreatic digest of casein.

Tryptone X is obtained using an advanced process that allows the natural release of vitamins into the product. As a result, this highly nutritious peptone encourages improved growth rates for a variety of important microorganisms.

Tryptone is an excellent source of amino nitrogen and is often used as a constituent in microbial culture media. Its high tryptophan content makes it ideal for use in media that test for the indole reaction. It can also be used to detect ‘flat sour’ or ‘sulphide’ spoilage organisms in the canning industry and in sterility testing media.

Tryptone X also provides an excellent source of vitamins. It may be used as a constituent of media used in fermentation processes to produce antibiotics, extracellular protein, vaccines, interferon and diphtheria toxoid. It could also be used in industrial biotechnology for the production of recombinant proteins and specialty chemicals (ethanol, mannitol, bioplastic PHA, heavy duty detergents), in the production of monoclonal antibodies and for research purposes.

In growth studies, Tryptone X demonstrated superior performance compared to a standard tryptone product in the growth of Escherichia coli (ATCCR 25922T), Lactobacillus brevis (ATCCR 8291T), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCCR 9144T), Citrobacter freundii (ATCCR 8090T) and Enterobacter aerogenes (ATCCR 13048T). In addition, both Oxoid Tryptone X and Oxoid Tryptone demonstrated improved growth curves for Bacillus subtilis (ATCCR 6633T) compared to competitor tryptone products. Furthermore, Tryptone X offers excellent uniformity, with proven lot-to-lot consistency.

Together with Oxoid Tryptone and Oxoid Tryptone T (used in the production of Clostridium tetani), the addition of Tryptone X allows Oxoid to offer an excellent selection of products for formulations that require a pancreatic or tryptic digest of casein.
