Haemoglobin testing by capillary electrophoresis

Introduction of the haemoglobin kit for Sebia Capillarys, now available from Analytical Technologies, will allow haematology laboratories to take advantage of capillary electrophoresis technology to make the separation of normal haemoglobin fractions and detection of major haemoglobin variants easier and more reliable, it is claimed.

The clearly focused band of the normal HbA2 fraction allows automatic identification with an excellent separation of haemoglobin variants. In addition, Hb variants C and E can be detected clearly and a slight migration shift of Hb S and Hb D allows easy identified by superimposing a memorised reference curve. The variant Hb F is shown as a perfect individual focused band between A and S. The outstanding separation achieved by Capillarys means that complementary tests, such as acid gel tests, which are frequently carried out for confirmation purposes, are usually unnecessary. With a throughput of 40 samples per hour and the haemolysate prepared directly from unwashed blood, the new generation of capillary electrophoresis increases the speed and efficiency of haemoglobin testing for busy haematology departments.
