Sartorius elegance

Sartorius continues to enhance its product capabilities with the addition of four new products for the life science laboratory.

Many laboratory applications now require fast and accurate recovery and concentration of peptides and the Vivaspin 500 centrifugal filter units from the Vivascience range offer a reliable method for the concentration of lowweight peptides. The 3 kDa MWCO membrane that is incorporated in the Vivaspin 500 centrifugal filter unit is ideally suited to peptides with molecular weights as low as 3 kDa, showing a 90% recovery. These results are due to the design of these units, which always optimise retentate recovery. Moving on, the companyÆs Vivacell 250 ultrafiltration unit is a breakthrough concept for the concentration of larger biological samples, with many advantages over stirred-cell technology. One of the most crucial steps at every stage of the protein purification protocol is concentration of the sample. This step enables the gathering of important data including specific activity, yield, recovery and the degree of fold purification. The Vivacell 250 allows the concentration of a 250-mL sample at any one time and uses gas pressure to force the samples against the membrane, which is housed in a plastic support structure. A variety of molecular-weight cut-off membranes is available to cater for different applications throughout the laboratory. Another recent innovation from Sartorius is the NucleoCounter YC-100 yeast cell counter. The manual microscopy method of counting cells in the laboratory is time consuming and generally provides results that depend on the subjective judgment of the operator. The new counter offers ease of use and reliable operation, being especially well suited to the routine analysis of yeast samples, and is intended for use in both the research and productions environments. The principal technique that is used in the NucleoCounter is the well-known method of fluorescence microscopy. Finally, the new ME analytical balance range from Sartorius means users will soon be able to get weighing results even faster. Replacing the award-winning Genius range, the Sartorius ME takes just eight seconds to deliver a stable readout, with an accuracy of five decimal places û and itÆs a readout that is completely reproducible. No other balance in this performance class is faster or more proficient at performing the core task of analytical weighing.
